Aimpoint Express
You've seen those oddballs with their little pinkies in the air and a strange loping style of walking as they survey their 25 footer for par. Yup, that is a sighting of the lesser-speckled Apointee, a less rare bird than it used to be.
I am guessing you want to know what is in the Apointee's mind when all his/her arm waving, semaphore stuff is going on as you gently slam your 3 footer off the green?
Read on my friend.

AimPoint Express
Distance = less than 6 feet
- Make sure your toes point up the slope
- Hold club in centre of your body so it doesn't disturb your weight balance
- Feel / measure the slope under your feet
- Usually it is between 0.5 degrees to 5 degrees
Aiming the putt (say its left to right)
- 0 degrees = centre cup
- 0.5 degrees = left centre
- 1 degree = left edge
- 2 degrees = 1 inch left of the hole
- 3 degrees = 2 inches
- 4 degrees = 3 inches
- 5 degrees = 4 inches and so on
Distance = 2 to 7 yards
- The aim point is determined by finger width from centre cup
- Get your degree of slope at 1/3 and 2/3 distance from the hole
- Your slope degree choice is the higher of the two measures at 1/3 and 2/3 distance
Aiming the putt
- Right arm slightly bent out in front of your body
- 0.5 degrees = use little pinky side on
- 1 degree = index finger front on (right hand)
- 1.5 degrees = thumb
- 2 degrees = 2 fingers
- 3, 4, 5 degrees are 3, 4 and 5 fingers
Distance = over 7 yards
- The aim point is determined by finger width from centre cup
- Get your slope degrees 1/3, 1/2 and 2/3 paces from the hole
- Your degree choice is the higher of the three measures
Aiming the putt
- Right arm slightly bent out in front of your body
- 0.5 degrees = use little pinky side on
- 1 degree = index finger front on (right hand)
- 1.5 degrees = thumb
- 2 degrees = 2 fingers
- 3, 4, 5 degrees are 3, 4 and 5 fingers
Note 1:
To check my reading of the slope, I use a reassuringly cheap Huepar AG01 Digital Angle Gauge (other measuring tool thingies are available!).
Note 2:
The more you practice your putting with the digital angle grinder, the better you get at guessing the slope.
